Company description
Centre for Children and Adolescents Welfare (CCAW) is a community based Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) which works to fight against Child Labour and Trafficking in the Central Region of Ghana and also securing for the wellbeing of deprived children and some adolescents.
Child Labour is an illegal recruitment of children into an industry or business; and Child Trafficking is the action or practice of illegally procuring and relocating children, typically for the purposes of forced labour or sexual exploitation or rituals.
These are large problems in 19 Municipal District in the Central Region and CCAW is to fight against these two practises.
Komenda-Edina-Eguafo-Abrem (K.E.E.A) District is the selected area for operation and has been grouped into five (5) zones. The first zone
Children are forced by their parents to help in fishing, fish smoking, drying and selling; a condition that prevents them from going to school and sometimes are trafficked to other fishing communities outside the region during fishing lean season. The CCAW has determined to effectively help reduce or eradicated these menace and has identified some the causes as:
• Poverty and high level of unemployment
• Ignorant and illiteracy on the part of some people.
• Cultural practices and ritual purposes (human sacrifices, inheritance, etc.)
• Broken home (divorce, death of a parent, disaster, etc.)
• Separation of spouse (spouses not staying together, etc.)
• Indiscipline and tribalism
• Economic hardship in a community
• Lack of social amenities, and educational infrastructure.
• And many others.
CCAW determinations in dealing with the problems are:
i. Raising public awareness of related issues
ii. Social entrepreneurship programmes
iii. Community outreach programmes
iv. Seeking sponsorship for students and
v. The general welfare of children and adolescents
CCAW has developed workshops on the issue of child labour and trafficking. The workshop will provide information, discussion, and resources on various topics.
CCAW also seeks to educate the community on child rights and anti-trafficking norms and values as well as pressurising appropriate institutions to perform their duties.
The partners and co-ordinators for the workshop will be resource persons, Chiefs, Queen Mothers, Assembly Members, and Societal Opinion leaders who are willing to help deal with the problems. The materials and equipment that will be used include instructor’s manuals, power point overheads, hand outs, and many others.
The objectives among others create a child protection fund to support the vulnerable children or victims.
Our research reveals that Child Labour and Trafficking which are widely practised in these fishing communities in the District have worsened in recent times due to declining fish harvest.
Child Labour and Trafficking are mostly and effectively practised during the Christmas Eve, Easter Holidays, and local or traditional festival (mid-July to mid-September). During these periods, some parents and ‘Child Trafficking Agents’ mostly operate. CCAW has strategically planned to advocate by organising workshop, creating awareness, and sensitising parents and other stakeholders about the negativity and effects of Child Labour and Trafficking in the community from time to time.
Our program of activities comes with an appreciable cost to ensure its success. We appeal to the general public, donors, philanthropists, individuals, organisations and institutions to support us in kind or cash (materials, finances, and personal life experiences - resources).
